Lực lượng Phòng vệ biển (MSDF - hải quân) Nhật Bản kỷ niệm 60 năm thành lập ngày 14-10 bằng màn diễu binh khoe đội tàu chiến hùng hậu. Nhật phô diễn sức mạnh đúng vào lúc đang có căng thẳng quanh quần đảo Senkaku/Điếu Ngư với Trung Quốc.

45 tàu chiến của MSDF đã tham gia diễn binh ở vùng biển vịnh Sagami, ngoài khơi Yokosuka, bao gồm tàu khu trục, tàu đệm không khí dùng để tấn công các khu vực bờ biển hiểm trở và tàu ngầm mới. Ngoài ra còn có mặt khoảng 30 chiến đấu cơ, hầu hết là trực thăng và máy bay tuần tra chống tàu ngầm P-3C, của MSDF.
Xuất hiện cùng tàu Nhật là các tàu chiến đến từ Mỹ, Singapore và Úc. Đại diện của 20 quốc gia, kể cả Trung Quốc, đã tham dự buổi lễ được tổ chức ba năm một lần này.
Đây là lần đầu tiên các tàu chiến nước ngoài tham gia cuộc duyệt binh kể từ năm 2002, khi 17 tàu từ 11 nước, trong đó có Nga và Mỹ, hiện diện.

Theo dõi buổi lễ trên tàu khu trục JS Kurama, Thủ tướng Nhật Bản Yoshihiko Noda tuyên bố nước này đang đối mặt với những “thách thức an ninh nghiêm trọng” nhưng không đề cập trực tiếp đến tranh chấp lãnh thổ với Trung Quốc hay Hàn Quốc.
Ông Noda cũng kêu gọi các binh sĩ chuẩn bị tinh thần để tiếp nhận “các trách nhiệm mới” trong tình hình an ninh đất nước có nhiều biến chuyển.

Theo hãng tin AP, Hải quân Nhật Bản được trang bị và huấn luyện thuộc loại tốt nhất thế giới. Nhưng những năm gần đây, Tokyo bắt đầu lo ngại trước sự trỗi dậy của láng giềng Trung Quốc và tình hình đặc biệt căng thẳng khi hai nước vướng vào tranh chấp tại quần đảo Senkaku/Điếu Ngư.

Questions & Answers_Bill Laurie

Will be speaking to college VN class this week.  They've already submitted 17 questions, answers to which I've since emailed back to their instructor, a USAF VN veteran with history Ph.D.  The presentation will touch on some of these topics and issues but will include much more than contained in these answers.  Here are the questions and answers..... 1. What do you feel the television media effects were on not only the soldiers, but the Vietnamese people as well? It's arguable that television/media coverage had little direct effect on troops, and less so on Viet Namese people, because they didn't see much of it.  It had a huge cumulative indirect effect on both because "news"(?), shallow and biased as it was, did effect people in U.S., both amongst general public and elected officials and decision makers.  The effect was detrimental.
